Tintin and the Ormus King: Chalice of Malice

Shrine discussion scene

Henry Sponsz meets JM Dawson, a corrupt government contact who will allow Sponsz to test the weapon on homeless people without legal repercussions. Sponsz knows him through his brother. Dawson could also be Melbourne’s Police chief – although that would not reflect reality in any way, shape or form. Dawson can also be Sponsz’s own brother, and thus renamed. Violette is seen here too, who along with Muller is part of Henry’s hit and testing team.

It may also be useful to have Hokeler appear here too – or rather Sponsz can call him on the phone after Dawson leaves telling him to go ahead with the weapon testing.

In Herge’s Tintin, Dawson is the corrupt Shanghai Police chief and, “appearing in a more sinister role in The Red Sea Sharks, sells weapons to both General Alcazar and General Tapioca using the pseudonym Mr. Debrett.” source 1

In Herge’s Tintin, obviously Colonel Sponsz and JM Dawson wouldn’t know each other.

This meeting can take place at night on Australia Day (26 Jan) when fireworks can be seen over the city (pics.) Alternatively, the meeting can take place during the daytime on any other day and they can just be walking through the surrounding park. In either case, they can step over a homeless person, who they later murder. The scene can close with a shot to the roof of the shrine, and then a cut to the war in Borduria.

Expanding, ANZAC day (25 April) is Australia’s most important day of remembrance and centers on the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. It is a public holiday and recalls a huge defeat in Turkey, but also celebrates the birth of a nation where “Bush Spirit” joined with “Duty to Empire” (Egan, The Land Downunder, Ch 18, 2003) yet resulted in almost 30,000 Australian casualties. It has become a memorial to all Australians who have served in war. By using this symbol, the audience can relate to their own experience with war and sacrifices to their country for the supposed greater good.

Also, it is interesting to note that the two battles occurring here are the one in Borduria and the other in Melbourne between Tintin and the arms machine that enable the Bordurian war to continue – with homeless people as the first casualties.

One issue for this film can be: Someone is going to suffer, but who is it going to be, and how? Through justice, circumstance or revenge?

Tintin and the Ormus King: Chalice of Malice

Port scene 1

Captain Haddock is first shown here, whereby he strikes up a conversation with the Port Director, Jammo (nickname for Captain James Chester.) They have known each other for a long time, and Jammo has decided to quit sailing and stay grounded in order to see more of his family. They decide to go drinking at BiggieSmalls bar that night (where they end up meeting Adrian Boron.) Jammo likes the bar because of the breakdancing and music – a welcome change from the mundane nights on his ship Sirius . It is also a local bar to him. The same girls at Como House end up at BiggieSmalls that night on their hens’ outing.
Also, shown at the port is the vessel Bordurian that is meant to take the weapons truck to Borduria and also seen is Haddock’s Sentry Seven where the truck ends up after Tintin adjusts Jammo’s cargo-sheet in the story’s climax.

Redd White office scene

After having already seen Kurvi-Tasch speak to White, this is a better view of his office and the spying capabilities that he has of the companies in Blucorp’s portfolio. Blucorp itself has many investors (including public ones,) and his covert role is to keep the wars going and to continually divide-and-conquer wherever he can. He has his IT guy come in and show him a new system for completely monitoring all his CEOs and staff for whom he supplies finance, offices, laptops and all internet connectivity. His assistant and partner April May is a sort of cult-follower and he tells her a lot of what he is up to, although she herself has little ambition, intelligence or moral sense (and a lot of loyalty.) Redd White has a fetish for war propaganda and uprising posters. He speaks to Patty here and secretly enjoys her anguish and determination at being the rebel leader for whom he funds and promises a new weapon to “take the head off the serpent.” He lives vicariously through her, and wants to feel a part of human history, although he never wants to see anyone ‘win’ for whom he supports – they could eventually overpower him and he’d lose his “feelz and lulz.”

Tintin and the Ormus King: Chalice of Malice
+ Robert Adam candle stands
+ Robert Adam covered vases
+ George Stubbs – A lion attacking a horse
+ Antoine-Louis Barye bronze
+ Wedgwood vases
+ Chimneypiece from 77 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin (1780, England, Cararra + Breche marble, steel)

Sponsz introductory scene

Here at Sponsz’s place Henry Sponsz (foreground) is speaking to his hitman/psychiatrist/friend Muller (background.) Henry mentions to Muller the need to help out his boss/partner/friend Redd White who is developing a weapon for the Bordurian theater through White’s investee firm Scimitar and its CEO, Hokeler (Henry could also be invested in this company – it is not known, he might even want to invest later.)

Even though Henry Sponsz introduced Redd White to Patty, Henry does not know that Redd White also knows Kurvi-Tasch after White later reached out to him personally (they have mutual acquaintances.) Thus Henry (and Hokeler) think their weapon is going to Patty and they are the ‘good guys.’ They don’t know that White wants the weapon to go to Kurvi-Tasch as alluded to in the previous scene so he can make more money and prolong the war (White’s own backers might want that too.)

As such, Redd White is paying Sponsz, Muller (and Violette) to help out Hokeler with weapons testing and ‘hits’ – whatever is needed to ensure business continuity and Sponsz is also helping with his links to government (his brother is a political leader) and other various insiders.

Tintin and the Ormus King: Chalice of Malice
+ Josef Hoffmann sideboard
+ Josef Hoffmann chair
+ Josef Hoffmann winged chalice

Kurvi-Tasch intro scene
Here, the dictator of Borduria, Marshal Salazar Kûrvi-Tasch (note rebel Patty is from neighboring Syldavia and has a multi-generational grudge against Kurvi-Tasch and could also be connected to its current king or queen holding the sceptre, in addition to White) is shown and speaks to Redd White via video call who is financing him (White himself is financed by others who are not mentioned.) White reveals that he is seeking to obtain a new weapon for him to use against Patty who Kurvi-Tasch is currently fighting. On the chair behind him is a gift from White, a winged-chalice that he bought as a pair where he gave the other to Patty.  The “Chalice of Malice” could refer to this chalice, and/or the one that Rosalind uses when trying to poison Adrian Boron.

Unlike Herge Tintin, here in 2019, Kurvi-Tasch and Sponsz do not know each other. Kurvi-Tasch does not even need to know Hokeler (Scimitar CEO,) rather he just gets info from White later that a weapons shipment is arriving from Australia on a particular ship that he must intercept, and he can even use his guards Krônik and Klûmsi to help with this naval interception (and they can also be shown in this scene.)
